The agave and the Mexican plateau
Agave is a genus of succulent plants native to the warm and arid regions of America. To date, 210 species have been identified worldwide.
Of the Agave genus, 159 species grow naturally in Mexico and 119 have been classified as endemic to this country.
Maguey is a regional term used to refer to 4 species which are native to central and southern Mexico, the peculiarity of the maguey is the natural secretion of the sap called aguamiel.
Through a collective effort between industry, science and government, we are defining the practices that lead to the sustainable cultivation of maguey.
The objective is to implement an information system to monitor the conservation and restoration of ecological balance in the maguey region, mainly in the last three stages of the maguey vegetation cycle.
